Framhaldsskólinn í Austur-Skaftafellssýslu (FAS) is a junior college placed in Höfn in Hornafjörður and the school has about 200 students. The role of the school is primarily offering general studies, in addition to the emphasis of employment learning. Average time of school length is 3.5 years, though in many occasions people take year more or less.
FAS has been in successful operation for 27 years, the first 15 years the school was placed in the rural district Nes, which is about 7 km distance from Höfn. FAS has been participating in many foreign projects as an example this project. FAS other Hungarian foreign project was (Water and Fire) in 2005 participating with Kölcsey Ferenc high school in Zalaegerszeg in Hungary. This project „Living in a changing Climate“ is FAS 8th foreign project and it is the second time Hungary and Iceland are working together.
FAS offer 7 different courses of study, Natural science, engineer, Mountaineering, Personal selection, Humanities and Social Sciences, Environmental and resource path, special emphasis. FAS is the only secondary school that offers Mountaineering studies and with all these tourist arriving its ideal working as an mountain tour guide.
FAS primary goal is to provide students general studies like Icelandic, English, Math, Danish and many other different subjects. Engineering employment is common because the village is based on fishing and seafood industries and engineering is definitely required.
FAS believes social activity is very important for the school. Students now participates in club activities, the number of clubs is as many as the student like, if you want a club of any special kind you can start it. Every club is required to have few events and in most occasions the event is for the whole school. All clubs meet once a week and students get meetings checked into their schedules. Each club chooses its leader and the person is responsible for that the attendance is written down. FAS has student association for the social life.
